Five of Swords tarot card

Upright

Tension rises and egos clash whenever the upright Five of Swords appears. The card depicts an intense drive to succeed over others without considering the trade-offs, often through unnecessary arguments or inflicting emotional hurt. The desire to always be right, regardless of consequence, breeds hostility and isolation. We might win an argument, but in the process, are we also losing other important things including relationships? The card asks us to evaluate what truly matters: winning a fight alone or succeeding alongside others.

Reversed

In its reversed position, the Five of Swords signifies that you are starting to understand that mutual success is more important than constantly winning. You might be considering a compromise with individuals you’ve disagreed with. The card encourages you to lean into dialogue and forgiveness. Listening to others and acknowledging one’s wrongs tend to be painful and difficult for the ego. However, it is also the only way to create resolutions that benefit everyone and pave the way for a smoother path to repair.
